Get your children camera ready!
Want to know how to achieve that frame-worthy photography of your kiddo? Well, of course kids love to just do their own thing (I GET it!!!) and things don't always go exactly how we imagined they would, but there are a few tips that will maximize your chances of having happy and smiling children during your next session. Read on for some simple and practical tips!
1) Tell them who I am
The day or so before our session, show them my picture! Tell them I'm a photographer and my job is to take pictures of kids and their families. You could even show them a video of me talking, tell them I'm a mama to 4 girls, and love to have fun so they understand I'm a real person. You could even show them some of the images from my website. This will just help them feel more prepared and at ease!
2) Choose comfortable outfits
Of course you have a vision on the outfits you'd like your family wearing. The color coordinating and the mix and matching is a task of its own! Try your best to select pieces your kiddos will be comfortable playing, spinning, and running around in. Maybe let your children pick one item each for their outfit so they are invested in it and excited about putting it on when it's. Happy kids equals happy photos!
One more note on this topic: If you have a baby or a messy toddler (they ALL are!) consider allowing a little extra time and dressing your kiddo at the site of the shoot. That way snack mistakes or any of the many scenarios that are bound to happen with a baby on your way to the session won't be a big deal.
3) Take late naps
If you happen to have little ones that still nap, consider trying to push their nap or last nap of the day (if we are doing a sunset session) to later than usual so they can have good energy and spirits during a time of day that tends to be when they are winding down at home.
4) Snack, snack, repeat
Give your children a hearty snack right before or on the way to our session. If I've learned anything, it's that full bellies go a looooong way in helping kids' maintain their joyfulness and prevent meltdowns. Additionally, it is a really good idea to bring little snacks or treats for the session- something to give them in between shots or as motivation. (Hey, I'm all for bribing in this situation!) One thing to keep in mind is avoid bring colorful or messy treats like M&M's or any chocolate for that matter. Raisins, popcorn, and even gummy bears are great choices!
5) Tell them the truth... it will be FUN!
Last but not least, tell your child that they will be having a fun time! Keep it light and exciting. We will be playing plenty of games, adventuring, climbing, and more. I have tons of tricks up my sleeve to get the littles to show their biggest smiles and have a hearty laugh or giggle session... just what is needed to capture your perfect family photographs!
